Yesterday was Day Six of the January Whole30. It was also the day that armed white supremacist insurrectionists attempted to take over the U.S. Capitol building and disrupt the final certification process of a democratic election. It’s not lost on me and my team that this is the third global Whole30 where all of us have simultaneously experienced some form of emotional, physical, and psychological duress.
And also, this is your reminder that you are not alone, and never are when you are part of this community.
Yesterday afternoon, DMs began coming in from you through Instagram. "I feel like I really do need wine." "I wish I could eat a cookie right now." This is a lot to process in this moment, and food is emotional. For most of us, we’ve used food and drink in the past to provide us with a brief moment of distraction, security, and comfort.
You might be tempted to return to old habits right now in the name of comfort or security, and if you did, I wouldn’t fault you for it. This is a lot to process (on top of a pandemic, and a world-wide social justice movement, and all of the "ands" that were 2020). And yet, I wonder if you might also use this opportunity to connect with your intentions for this program, and the community who is here to support that journey for you. Can we sit in this collective space together, name and discuss what we’re seeing and feeling, and find the connection we might otherwise seek in the wine or the cookie here instead?
I’m asking a lot, I know. And yet, I know how powerful you really are.
Perhaps you woke up this morning wondering if you should continue with your Whole30 or pause it to start again another time. I want you to know that the Whole30 HQ team and I are here to support the decision that is best for you, whatever that looks like. These are extraordinary times. We are all doing the best we can. The Whole30 will always be here for you, and we will help you take the best care of you regardless.
If you’re choosing to continue your Whole30 today, tomorrow, for the next 23 days, please give yourself grace. Let good enough be good enough. Call that your victory, because trust me, it’s a big one. We will continue to support you, today and always, with Whole30 support, resources, partnerships, and offerings.
- Melissa, for the Whole30 HQ team
